At Princeton Surgical Associates, our surgeons use advanced robotic technology to perform a variety of surgical procedures with precision and control. Robotic-assisted surgery is a minimally invasive approach that can be used for many procedures traditionally performed through larger incisions.
What Is Robotic Surgery?
Robotic-assisted surgery allows a surgeon to perform an operation through several small incisions using specialized instruments and a high-definition camera. The surgeon controls the robotic system from a console, guiding every movement of the instruments.
The robot does not perform the surgery independently. Instead, it translates the surgeon’s hand movements into precise movements of the surgical instruments. This technology can provide enhanced visualization, dexterity, and control during complex procedures.

How Robotic Surgery Works
Robotic-assisted surgery generally involves three components:
The Surgeon Console
The surgeon sits at a console and controls the surgical instruments using specialized hand and foot controls. The system provides a magnified, high-definition view of the surgical field.
The Robotic Arms
The robotic instruments are positioned through small incisions. The instruments are designed to provide a wide range of movement and precise control within the surgical area.
The Camera
A small, high-definition camera provides an enlarged view of the anatomy, allowing the surgeon to clearly visualize the area being treated. Throughout the procedure, the surgeon remains in complete control.
Procedures That May Be Performed Using Robotic Surgery
Robotic-assisted surgery may be used for a variety of general surgical procedures, depending on the patient’s condition and the surgeon’s recommendation. These may include:

Hernia Repair – Robotic technology may be used for certain inguinal, ventral, incisional, and complex abdominal hernia repairs.

Gallbladder Removal (Cholecystectomy) – Minimally invasive robotic techniques may be appropriate for selected gallbladder procedures.

Colon Surgery – Robotic-assisted techniques can be used for certain conditions affecting the colon, including some cancers and diverticular disease.

Rectal Surgery – Robotic technology may be used for selected rectal procedures, particularly when operating in the confined space of the pelvis.

Bowel Surgery – Certain small intestine and intestinal procedures may be performed using robotic-assisted techniques.

Removal of Masses – Selected benign or malignant masses may be removed using robotic-assisted surgery when appropriate.

Is Robotic Surgery Right for Me?
Robotic surgery is not automatically the best choice for every patient. The appropriate surgical approach depends on several factors, including the type and location of the condition, previous surgeries, overall health, and the complexity of the procedure.
During your consultation, your surgeon will discuss the available surgical options and explain the recommended approach for your individual needs. This may include robotic-assisted, laparoscopic, or traditional open surgery.
What to Expect
Before surgery, your surgeon will review your diagnosis, discuss your treatment options, and explain the procedure in detail. If robotic-assisted surgery is recommended, you will receive instructions regarding preparation for surgery, medications, eating and drinking, and what to expect during recovery.
After surgery, your recovery plan will depend on the procedure performed and your individual circumstances. Your surgical team will provide detailed postoperative instructions and follow-up care.
